Karate Belt Colours

Karate Belts
Each organisation has its own colour belt grading system.
The colour of the belt signifies the grade of the wearer. But all of them start with a white belt and finish with a black belt.
This is the colour,Kyu or Dan and Japanese name of the Shotokan Karate style that I was trained with.
You always start off as an ungraded white belt, and have to train for at least three months.
Before you are allowed to grade for your 9th kyu and each kyu thereafter which will be a orange belt(kukyu),all Japanese names of the grades will be in brackets.8th kyu is a red belt (hachikyu),7th kyu(shichikyu) yellow,6th kyu (rokyu) green,5th kyu (gokyu) purple,4th kyu (yonkyu) is a purple belt with one white stripe,3kyu (sankyu)brown,2nd kyu (nikyu) brown belt with one white stripe, then 1st kyu (ikkyu) is a brown belt with two white stripes.
When you reach this high standard you have to train for at least six months before you can go for your 1st dan, which is your first black belt(shodan).
All belts from now are black,2nd (nidan),3rd (sandan),4th (yondan) 5th (godan),6th (rokudan,7th(sichidan),8th (hachidan),9th (kudan) and 10th (judan).
Going from 1st to 2nd dan you have to train for at least a year, thereafter to go higher you may have to run tour own kate school(dojo).
When you become a 4th dan a lot of spiritualist training comes into the teaching.
When someone reaches the fantastic height of 10th dan they revert back to white belt or red belt because they then claim that they have gone full circle of there training.
